Dividing Budget Responsibilities in Your Family

One of the most challenging things about preparing a family budget is figuring out who should be responsible for what parts. In general there are only two people contributing to the family budget. Figuring out bills, savings contributions, and other expenses can be stressful. However, having clear divisions and agreements on how the budget is to be carried out will prevent stress in the future.

One way to go about splitting expenses is by percentage. Have each person contribute 50% of the budget, which makes it all equal. However, as is most often the case, partners will earn differing amounts, making it harder or easier on one person than the other. In that case you can figure out the difference in percentage one person makes from the other and split how much each person is paid based on their percentage of the total income. Percentages can help make dealing with your finances much more fair and easy.

For many people this might not be an ideal solution. Often you have to find a way that works best for you. If you are unconcerned about keeping your money separated or ensuring that each person still have their own sum of money for personal use, than you can split it up however you want. Some couples find that having one person pay all the bills while the other contributes to savings and pays for all outings is a good way of splitting it up. There are many options available to you, sometimes it just takes a bit of experimentation, and a chance to sit down and discuss what kinds of money management issues are important to you.
